National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

Understanding the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support to people with a disability via support packages that are tailored to individual needs.

The aim of the NDIS is to support people with a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. It does this by identifying what disability supports someone needs in order to help achieve their goals in life. This might include greater independence, involvement in the community, education, employment and health and wellbeing.

This funding is under Capital supports and is designed to be flexible. Equipment in this category can help with mobility such as wheelchairs or scooter, personal care aids like handrails or shower chair, home modification and technology for communication.

Budget for items under Capital Support are restricted and each item will be specific to your plan. Most items would require quotes from the supplier, assessment form, delivery, setup, adjustment and maintenance costs.

Support Coordination

Support Coordinators are people who can help you understand your NDIS plan. They can work with you and source out supports to ensure that you get the outcomes best for you. They will look at your personal circumstances and goals to give you advice on what steps to help you achieve it.

The intended outcomes of support coordination are to help you gain more confidence and increase your capacity to lead your NDIS plan.

There are three levels to this support:

1. Support Connection: These are connections to support providers

2. Support Coordinators: These are your advisors who will walk you through the process and build your capacity to manage your plans.

3. Specialise Support Connection: This is intended for people with more complex needs.
